28-Week Prayer Guide
scripture reading
Hello all. I am so grateful to be able to share this week’s prayer guide with you. This week we continue to focus on spiritual disciplines, and specifically the practice of Scripture Reading. When you hear the word “Bible Study,” what comes to mind? Maybe you think of the captivating or inspiring Bible studies you have heard taught. Maybe you think of a time when you were studying the Bible on your own and felt alive and fed. But I am guessing most of us are carrying around with us a vague sense of guilt about not studying the Bible more. We know we should, but we don’t. The reasons we give are many—too tired, too busy, too whatever. Chances are we even feel bad about our excuses. The truth is that we find the Bible confusing, don’t know how to read it, and so we go to someone who does or turn to something easier to digest. We are like people going grocery shopping in a foreign country. We don’t know what any of the labels say and can’t figure out what anything is, so we leave befuddled and go to the nearest McDonald’s for some already made, less-confusing food even if it isn’t as nourishing as we would have liked. My hope is that this week we will rediscover the joy of hearing God speak by reading His Word.
Week 26
Day 6
August 30
“How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked or stand in the pathway with sinners or sit in the company of mockers! Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night. He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.”
— Psalm 1:1-3
REMINDER: This passage promises us that if we will think deeply about and drink in the Word of God, we will be like trees planted firmly by a river. The tree in this passage experiences productivity (yields fruit), it thrives (leaves don’t wither), and it prospers. That is what we can expect when we study God’s Word. It will change us. Notice the tree does nothing but stay near the water. The water does everything else. The same is true for us. When we plant our lives next to the stream of God’s Word, we will find the blessing and abundant life we were intended for.
TODAY’S PRAYER:
Father, show me the streams of this world that I am tempted to plant myself by and drink deeply from. Help me to be planted next to the stream of Your Word. As I drink deeply from this stream, I pray that You will fulfill Your Word to make me fruitful in the right season, fulfilled in the life You have for me, and effective in all that You call me to do. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
