Go Beyond At Home
28-Week Prayer Guide
serving and giving
Each of us has a purpose in God’s plan. God makes it evident through His Word that our purposes go beyond selfish limitations into serving others in many different ways. This week let’s hear from the Lord through Scripture and prayer as we consider how we can give more of ourselves to serve Him.
Week 25
Day 2
August 19
“Let each one live his life in the situation the Lord assigned when God called him. This is what I command in all the churches.“
— 1 Corinthians 7:17
“Do not covet your neighbor’s house. Do not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.“
— Exodus 20:17
REMINDER: A well-known quote, thought to be first said by Teddy Roosevelt, is “comparison is the thief of joy”. It can be too easy in this life to look at our neighbor laboring away and seeing great success in their endeavors and wonder why that same success is not coming towards us. Likewise, we can too easily become downtrodden thinking our life is not as purposeful as another as we toil away in our day-to-day tasks. Paul calls us away from that way of thinking in 1 Corinthians as he has established a rule within Christian churches to do the exact opposite of this comparison game. We are to lead our own separate lives. And not just any life, the life God has called us to live. What calling has God given you? Maybe it is washing little hands, or mowing the lawn, or going to school, or leading a company or writing a book… the list goes on and on. No matter what He has called you to, it is your calling alone. What a glorious thing that our Creator loves us so much that He gave us each a unique life to live. Even from Exodus, we see that God wants us to be free from the sin of comparison. Instead of comparing your life to anyone else, find joy in the purposeful calling of your life – there is no one else with your same giftings in this whole beautiful world.
TODAY’S PRAYER:
– Praise the Lord for creating you to be unique.
– Confess any sense of envy or comparison in your heart towards other believers.
– Thank The Lord for something specific in your life that makes you special.
