28-Week Prayer Guide

Prayer and fasting

There is great joy in walking intimately with the Lord, where we get to experience and encounter Him in new ways. Spiritual disciplines are a beautiful way to connect with God and lean into our relationship with Him. This week, we’re going to consider how prayer and fasting can strengthen our faith, hope and trust in the Lord.

Week 23
Day 4

August 7

Whenever you fast, don’t be gloomy like the hypocrites. For they disfigure their faces so that their fasting is obvious to people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting isn’t obvious to others but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

— Matthew 6:16-18

REMINDER: There is a deeply spiritual refining that happens to our hearts when we fast. And that refining turns into the blessing of knowing God more. As we fast, we are consistently reminded of our need for Christ. Much like prayer, fasting is a spiritual discipline that we can and should engage in as believers. Don’t know where to start? I highly recommend a fast from social media or technology.

TODAY’S PRAYER:

–  Ask the Lord if you need to implement a fast in this season of your walk with Him.

–  Take time to be in “the secret place” with the Lord. Even a few minutes makes a difference.
