30-Day Devotional

DAY 29

february 27

“Self-indulgence is the enemy of gratitude, and self-discipline is usually its friend and generator… a person’s appetites are linked: full stomachs and jaded palates take the edge from our hunger and thirst for righteousness. They spoil the appetite for God”

— Cornelius Plantinga, Jr.

“watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Matthew 26:41

TODAY’S PRAYER THOUGHT
We live on a Super-size-me society. It seems people nowadays (even Christians) are more interested in the here and now, the material instead of the spiritual. Therefore food or entertainment is more appealing than abstaining from it. Fasting causes our flesh to resist. If we endure that’s a victory – but when if indulge, we may be spoiling our appetite for God. My mentor Thomas Cragoe, said: “we deprive ourselves from something good in order to achieve something better.” The goal is fasting out of devotion instead of legalism. We are just trying to tame the flesh so that it would crave and thirst after God rather than obey the flesh.

TODAY’S PRAYER FOR GOD’S PEOPLE
Lord, help us develop an appetite and thirst after you through fasting. That our cravings would be more align with Spiritual rather than the material things of this world…which is so appealing.

TODAY’S PRAYER FOR THE PEOPLE ON YOUR LIST
Our dear heavenly Father, as we pray for the people in our lists, develop in them an appetite for you and your Word. Cause them to thirst and seek after you and help us to be available to them.
