“Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…” Pursuing happiness sounds like a great thing. As we look around, friends and neighbors are pursuing happiness in many different ways. Movies, music, and commercials sing a similar tune—fulfill your dream, and you deserve the very best. There is nothing wrong with dreaming and receiving rewards for hard work, but this life is about so much more than just “me, my dreams, and my comforts.” We were created for a purpose. We are designed to receive the most joy not from created things but rather from a relationship with the Creator.
What is the best gift you have received? What is the best gift you’ve ever given? How did the experiences of giving and receiving compare?
We have a culture that encourages us to accumulate and upgrade as much as we possibly can to achieve contentment. Could it be that generosity and giving may bring a deeper, more abiding joy than any upgrades?
Our giving and generosity are intended to be intricately tied to our joy. True generosity is a result of a heart transformed by the love and grace of Jesus Christ.
